DNC 2012- Barack Obama

Many people regard US President Barack Obama’s public speaking skills as not only a factor in his success, but as the prime reason for his success. His powerful communication skills has led to his inauguration in 2008, and perhaps even his re-election in 2012.

The primary tactic he uses to impress the crowds, and ultimately win their votes, is colourful and vivid imagery. When describing America’s innovation, he states: “...and everyone shared in the pride and success – from the corner office to the factory floor”. Similarly, he never mentions a fact without attributing it to a specific location. Examples of this are seen throughout. When speaking of the American auto-industry, he says: “I've met workers in Detroit and Toledo who feared they'd never build another American car.” Likewise, many other facts contain specific locations.

Another method he employs is that of constant repetition. From what I heard, his main idea stressed “two choices”. After every main topic, such as energy, finances, or employment, he constantly reminds the audience that the choice is theirs. He reminds them that the difference between what the Democrats offer and what the Republicans offer was in the hands of the People.

To be able to use the above mentioned strategies, and succeed, requires the knowledge of the crowd that he is speaking to. This is clearly seen when he was speaking at the 2012 Democratic National Convention. His message was tailored to students, blue-collared workers, and therefore was directed at the middle-class. He was not speaking to the upper-class, else his message would not have been critical towards those receiving higher incomes.

In terms of physical appearance, Obama’s body language conveys a strong sense of confidence. Some hand gestures may be seen as excessive, however most can agree that they fit well with the message. Using facial expressions, he able to express both a joking attitude, along with a serious expression whenever needed.

As a final comprehensive thought, Barack Obama employs many strategies and tactics to be able to gain new supporters, as well as retain already existing ones. He is descriptive, repetitive, and knows his audience. He is able to control his body and conform it to the speech. Using these tactics, he was able to become President of the United States of America. If history repeats itself, we may soon see him as president once again.
