Texas Leadership Speech Review -- Eugene Wong

To be absolutely honest, I have a bit negative impression on Texas. This is mostly thanks to people like George Bush who are famous for making slips of the tongue (frequently called Bushisms in case) and clearly aren’t too bright. However this man who is speaking seems to be a fairly competent speaker, or least can keep his audience entertained.

I really admire his sense of humor, which clearly shows through in his speech. I feel a good portion of time involved the audience laughing and enjoying them selves. Humor can help a speech become memorable by making it stand out from other dull ones. Also, humor will help your audience pay attention to your points if they are enjoying listening, as opposed to falling asleep.
However, I feel that the speaker could have been more organized with his speech. For most video, he was talking about his hometown and football rather than actually focusing on the main idea, which was supposed to be leadership. The script clearly lacked a connection between the humorous stories and his points. In this case, I think he should have told each story and then linked it to a strong point. Then, at the end, he should have tied the point into his main idea, leadership.
Overall, the speech was enjoyable and fun to listen to, but lacked an actual purpose or message. Much like a cake that tastes good, but doesn’t actually satisfy hunger, the “speech” was really closer to a stand-up comedy act than a leadership speech. Truth be told, I think the speaker would make a great comedian, but perhaps should work on his speaking skills.
