Martin Sheen

Martin Sheen recently delivered a very powerful and thought-provoking message during a WE-Day gathering. The event attracted thousands, and many were moved to tears by his speech. Although some of his tactics were misused, I believe that he is, in general, a very motivational speaker.

Using variations in volume, he was able to communicate effectively to the audience, and drive home the key points of his message. Although the beginning of speech, when he was speaking about his parents’ lives, was slightly rushed, he maintained a driving rhythm behind his words, allowing for a build-up of excitement.

Another thing I noticed was a constant habit of pacing back and forth along the stage, which was sustained throughout his message. Perhaps it was done so that the audience sitting in certain areas could see him, but it was somewhat annoying. It did, however, provide a sense of urgency to the topic that he was speaking about.

One thing I must point out is the way he addressed his audience. I must say that I enjoyed the speech very much, but felt disappointed by the fact that his speech didn’t fit too well to the needs of the audience. What do I mean? During the course of his message, he used many complicated words that most kids wouldn’t know. I understand the fact that there were some people in the audience that may have understood at least the meaning, but half the kids in that auditorium were grade five and lower, making them completely oblivious to the vocabulary that was being presented to them.

Apart from all the bad things we can say about Martin Sheen, I believe that the message he brought to the young people was inspiring, beneficial, and will definitely be the start to a better future. Using a popular figure like him to promote WE Day was definitely a good idea.

With all these things in mind, Martin Sheen is still the great speaker he used to be.
Although he could work harder to tailor the speech to his audience, his presence alone makes the speech worthwhile. His voice is powerful, and confident. What really makes this speech inspiring is the fact that he genuinely believes what he is saying. As they say, honesty is the best policy.
